iApps v’s Bridge

I know i should be posting pictures of schoolgirls and funny men, but last night as i downloaded some photos from my camera i came to the stark realization of something that has been bothering me for a while.

As anyone who looks over my shoulder will know i have been using Aperture for quite some time now, …taken in my its dark interface and funky feature such as that big old magnifying loupe and slidy switches etc.
But lets be honest here, ..it has its drawback, …mainly

  • it rinses your entire system performance.
  • it is constantly caching thumbnails and doing some other weird and wonderful background processes.
  • Upon importing an already established 40Gb library it still, 3 months later has not cached even half the thumbnails.
  • It has selective operating, it doesn’t like older machines, 12inch powerbooks, and anything that isn’t Intel.
  • It has spazzed out and will not display any images on my old G5 although they are all fine it says they are unreadable [what a disaster, i have been trying to remedy this for months].
  • Finally, it creates its own unique library structure, which of course will never be compatible with anything else.

As for iPhoto, …don’t even get me started. :)

So what is the solution, …we all have shed loads of images, and we really want to be able to do all of the things that photoshop does on-the-fly, but be able to organize our images in our own folder/filing structure whilst still having access to such novelties as playlists and such like.

Yes Ben, ..we could right our own database driven app that does everything we think we want, …but you still use Gimp for gods sake, so i don’t think you are our core demographic here :)

….the answer it would seem has been staring us in the face, ..open up your Applications/Program Files folder, ..and have a look next to Photoshop, there is an appplication called Adobe Bridge, ..have a play with it, ..it does everything and more, …to put it my way, ..it is dope.

It is the missing link between image library software and image manipulation and project management software for image driven projects, …i know i might sound like a reseller here, but i am just trying to pass osme knowledge that has been gained through much trial, error and frustration, and although this is not gospel, i seriously suggest anyone with Photoshop CS2 gives it a whirl.

As for getting your inbred iPhoto/Aperture library structure back into a system you know and love (that’s organized files and folder to you :) ….that is going to be a sunday afternoon of mass exporting me thinks, ..not a moment to soon either.

But not right now, ..I am in Tokyo remember !!
