Wordpress v’s Typo3, and then some…

So i have been looking at Typo 3 versus Wordpress, ..and at the same time comparing them to the other big two Drupal (which i have extensive experience in) and Joomla (in which i do not, but those around me use a lot.

That is an interesting Google article on the market trends for all 4, …..it is interesting to see that the czech republic, india and the other major outsourcing countries, they use Joomla (the more code heavy object orientated system) whereas the design concious trend setters New York and London prefer Wordpress.

My conclusion is that everything you read will tell you that Wordpress is more blog based, ..but in my opinion it is more publishing based, …however with a bit of skill it can be used for anything you want once you understand how the insides work, ..whereas Typo3 is very similar to Modx, it is very very flexible, however the learning curve and setup are more extensive and lengthier (i can make a 5 page wordpress site with SEO, multi user CMS and a bunch of other cool stuff in 4 hours, whereas Modx/Typo3 au take a few days).

My advice, ..try them all, ..set up demo installations of all of them on your server, keep them there and play around and setup demo sites in your spare time :)
The list is as follows:

Joomla - many many people swear by this one, …although i have not been convinced to try it yet.
Wordpress - this is the one for me, ..i can make it do anything and everything
ModX - a CMS framework, ..meaning you make the site designs and then plug them in to the CMS, ..this one is super powerful, ..but i found it not so easy to learn and use quickly
Typo3 - you tell me :)
Drupal - A user based system, excellent for multi user sites
Elgg - more of a social networking CMS, like a MySpace/Facebook Clone

So there you go, ..there are of course many many more, …and everyone has an opinion on everything, ..the best practice is to try as many as you can, ..and then get good in one, ..or if you have enough time, ..two.
The main thing you need to be able to do is to adapt them to your clients requirements, rather than adapt the client to the platform, …so also check out the module/plugins, ..and also free themes to modify, ….for me wordpress rules because if plug directly into sites like Flickr, has loads of cool AJAX plugins, …and, .well, .yes, ..i like wordpress.
