Thanks Tim, ...perhaps if you paid the same attention to the comments as you did to the spelling of MAMPP you might have encountered some of these sentences:

"The original article was written in February 2007 when i was lecturing at university, and no i have not seeked to update it since other than continue to relate the experience i had then."

"I have also tried to point out in the comment thread the date of the original article a number of time, and try and cite more recent sources for comparison also."

"So yes Miguel you are right, this post is not relevant anymore, …i will draw a line under it here
——————————————————————————- :)
…although if someone stumbles across any review/resource relevant to this discussion feel free to post it for us to see."

..oh yes, .and the article date 9th Feb 2007 :)

Thanks for spotting the typo though ;)

I guess you are mixing up MAMPP and MAMP? The original post talks about "MAMPP", which does not exist (anymore?). Instead there only is "MAMP" (only one p, so without perl). XAMPP on the other side has "perl" included (that's the second p), so this article is really misleading for someone who looks for an easy integration of perl in apache. So, if you need perl, I guess you have to go for XAMPP.

If anyone reading this article like me is at that cross road between deciding to use either MAMP or XAMPP please know that MAMP support/forum is not updated by forum/support moderators. From what I understand the company behind MAMP is not even sure the project will continue in the future. So if you are thinking of purchasing MAMP Pro please be advised it's possible there might not be any future releases! For now I would go for XAMPP or MAMP basic until it's understood what the state of affairs are with regards to the continuation of this product!

I don't think that would be very fair at all :) ...especially as i have not used either in any great capacity for a couple of years now.
The original article was written in February 2007 when i was lecturing at university, and no i have not seeked to update it since other than continue to relate the experience i had then.
I have also tried to point out in the comment thread the date of the original article a number of time, and try and cite more recent sources for comparison also.

There is indeed a xampp for osx http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-macosx.html and it looks just like the xampp i start using originally and loved, ..i just hope, and assume it works just as well.
mampp is still there too,...and i think their site inclines me to use their software just that little bit more http://www.mamp.info/ but i think i should bow out of this arguement as i now do most of my work direct on the server, and use my <a href="http://www.mogmachine.com/the-travesty-of-iphone-tethering" rel="nofollow">iphone tethering</a> to ensure i always have a connection, ...if not, ..i just go kite surfing.

So yes Miguel you are right, this post is not relevant anymore, ...i will draw a line under it here

Correct me if i am wrong mog,

But would it be a safe judgment me saying you are giving XAMPP an unfair trial seen as though you haven't tried the newest XAMPP out on mac intel? but yet still judging it from previous experience.

Fair comment "IF ITS NOT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT", but surely if you are to pass judgment on software have the latest versions to compare, then the advice or opinion you give would be much more appreciated.

*This is not a rant*<- lol

I would always advise mac users to opt for MAMP, but as stated earlier this is slightly dated advice as i have not used XAMPP for a number of years now and it may now be up to spec, ..all my problems started when using it on the first Intel machines, ...and as MAMp has never let me down, i have not looked back.

Although I've been a long time XAMPP user on Wintel, I also have been using it on my G4 iBook. However, after installing the latest version of WordPress and Textpattern using 0.72, I'm getting annoying error messages like "You tried to save to a post that doesn't exist" or something similar. Or if I try to delete a post, same error. WTF!!!!!! I'm getting lots of problems with the TXP database when running it under XAMPP for Mac OS/X. But I'm gonna download the latest version and see if that fixes the problems.

I guess it depends on that old chestnut, ..PERSONAL PREFERENCE !!

There is a <a href="http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2008/04/xampp-vs-mamp.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">nice article reviewing XAMPP/MAMP available here</a> where the author talks about the differences between the two, but all that happens is as with so many pieces of software, they all perform the basic fundamental tasks, but with different interfaces, buttons & widgets.

Lucky we don't all like exactly the same things really/
